Vital IQ: Flex Your Knowledge

Send to a friend

How much do you know about building better bones?

If you work out to tone muscles but rarely give much thought to your bones, it's time to study up on bone health with our true-false test.

1. You're at peak bone mass in your 20s.

TRUE:
The key is maximizing that peak level because the more bone mass you have going into the following decades, when it inevitably declines, the lower your risk for osteoporosis.

2. You can build bone similarly to the way you build muscle.

TRUE: "Bone is adaptable, living tissue that gets stronger when it's stressed appropriately at varying angles and forces," says Rebekah Rotstein, creator of Pilates for Buff Bones™ currently offered at Kinected.

3. Strong bone is stiff and rigid.

FALSE: "Bone is continuously regenerating itself to remain fresh and healthy," says Rotstein. "So healthy bones are ones that are resilient in strength rather than merely stiff."

4. A bone-focused class won't give me the intense workout I need.

FALSE: During a Buff Bones™ class, you'll be standing more than in regular Pilates to help with posture, alignment and hip strength. As a result, your backside and thighs will definitely feel the burn!

Pilates for Buff Bones™ at Kinected, $80 for a 4-week series (beginning first Tuesday of each month), $27 for a single class (Mention Vital Juice for a 10% discount through March), 151 W. 19th St., 2nd Fl., (212) 463-8308, MAP
