Vital Tested: Beyond Barre

Send to a friend
Forget the electric slide, it's all about the ballet boogie!

We glided through this new workout.

There's no shortage of barre workout classes in New York (or bars, but that's a different article). But Beyond Barre, offered at select New York Sports Club locations, takes the workout to a new place. A place kind of like the surface of an ice hockey table.

We're talking about the GlideBoard, a super-slick surface that forces Beyond Barre students to activate tough-to-reach muscles in order to stay on their feet. We stopped by to try a class with one of the founders, professional dancer and Power Pilates instructor Michelle DuVall. Our experience:

  • Board, not bored. Besides cardio intervals on the GlideBoard, class incorporates traditional (off-board) ballet-inspired barre workouts as well as a weighted arm series and abs exercises. You'll also get time with props such as balls and bands.
  • It's got legs. Sliding on the GlideBoard worked our inner thighs to the max, while doing leg sculpting exercises at the barre (read: mini squats galore) assured us our gams would be bikini season-ready.
  • Bring it all together. While we wanted to hate DuVall during the workout (our legs and butts were feeling the burn), we couldn't help loving the way the barre-fusion class focuses on body alignment to create a long, lean physique.

Want to try the class but don't belong to NYSC? Vital Juicers can score a free pass--details here.

Slip n' slide.
