Board Meeting
Hang (a perfect) ten with this indoor surfing workout.
Our minds may be wandering to pristine beaches and fresh saltwater, but never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd actually go surfing, in January, without leaving Manhattan!
SurfSET Fitness has brought the gnarly moves indoors at The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers, no waves needed. The RipSurfer X (pictured) is a surfboard that balances on three mini half-BOSU balls and is connected to a resistance band system similar to a Pilates Reformer.
Our New York editor tested the total body workout (see her in action). What to expect:
- Ride the wave. Use the resistance cords to mimic paddling against the waves for a serious arm, shoulder and back sculpting.
- Cowabunga. Master the cardio "pop-up" (how surfers hop from their stomachs to standing) and use core strength to virtually ride a wave.
- Swell moves. Just balancing on the board is tough, but the workout takes it to the next level--see some of the moves here.
Beachy keen.

Classes start this week, $35 for a single session, open to non-members. The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers, Pier 60, 20th St. & Hudson River Park, (212) 336-6000, MAP
