Zodiac-Inspired Cocktails
Baby, what's your sign?
I use the work of Nicholas Culpeper, the father of western herbalism, as a guide when creating astrology-themed drinks. In medieval herbal astrology, plants have zodiac signs, just like people. In the medieval times, only seven planets had been discovered as opposed to the nine today. Since these drinks are based on medieval herbal astrology, the ancient ruling planet for each sign is referenced.
Aries: star ingredient: cranberry
Aries is ruled by Mars: the red, fiery, hot planet. Flavors that are very spicy or very tart are often ruled by Mars. The cranberry's bright red color, underscored by its tangy tart flavor, certainly betrays its allegiance to the red planet.
2 oz. TY KU soju*
2 oz. cranberry spice syrup
½ oz. lemon juice
Perrier
(served over ice topped with Perrier and floating cranberries as garnish)
Taurus: star ingredient: mint
As with Libra, who is also owned by beautiful Venus, this planet rules all things fragrant and yummy. Hence, mint falls under the dominion of Venus and can be identified as a Taurus.
2 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. mint syrup
1 oz. lemon juice
(served up with a candy cane garnish)
Gemini: star ingredient: hazelnut
The hazelnut is listed in Culpeper's book as being ruled by Mercury. Its delicate leaves and flowers are indicative of this planet's fleeting quality.
2 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. hazelnut cocoa syrup
1 oz. creamer
(served up with crumbled hazelnut garnish)
Cancer: star ingredient: egg
The egg is ruled by the moon, as is Cancer. They share the traits of a hard outer shell and a white fleshy inside.
2 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. 'nog anise syrup
1 oz. creamer
(served up with a floating star anise)
Leo: star ingredient: clementine
The bright, round, orange colored sun rules Leo. Because the clementine bears a heavy physical resemblance to the sun, it is given rulership under the sun, hence a Leo.
2 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. clementine rosemary syrup
1.5 oz. lemon juice
Perrier
(served over ice topped with Perrier and a clementine slice as garnish)
Virgo: star ingredient: pomegranate
The pomegranate is ruled by Mercury in Culpeper's manuscripts due to its astringent qualities. Mercury is the fleet-footed planet and holds ownership over fast binding and drying astringents. That's why the pomegranate is a Virgo.
1 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. TY KU liqueur
1 1/2 oz. pomegranate grenadine syrup
(served up with floating pomegranate seeds as garnish)
Libra: star ingredient: sugar plum
Libra is ruled by Venus. This vibrant planet holds dominion over all things sweet, succulent, fragrant, beautiful and downright delicious. A perfectly ripe plum would certainly fall under rulership of Venus, and could easily be called a Libra.
1 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. TY KU liqueur
1 oz. lemon juice
1 oz. plum syrup
(served up with a sugar rim)
Scorpio: star ingredient: clove
The pungent and powerful clove is ruled by none other than what many refer to as the planet of war, Mars. Today, Scorpio is considered co-ruled by Mars and Pluto.
1 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. TY KU sake
1 oz. lemon juice
1 oz. clove chili syrup
Perrier
(served over ice, topped with Perrier, garnished with a clove)
Sagittarius: star ingredient: chestnut
The chestnut tree's diameter can be as great as 17 feet, which epitomizes the grandiose qualities of the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter. Sheer size determines that the chestnut is ruled by Jupiter and is hence a Sagittarius.
2 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. roast chestnut syrup
1 oz. creamer
(served up or over ice with a chestnut slice garnish)
Capricorn: star ingredient: molasses
Discarded as a by-product, molasses is the almost black, densely thick, mildly bitter sweet syrup that is born from the dregs of the sugar cane plant. Saturn symbolizes frugality, austerity and scarcity, and molasses is ruled by Saturn due to the very nature of its genesis.
2 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. gingerbread molasses syrup
1 oz. creamer
(served up or over ice with a slice of candied ginger garnish)
Aquarius: star ingredient: cedar
Cedar is ruled by Saturn, Aquarius' ancient ruling planet. Today, Aquarius is considered to be co-ruled by Saturn and the more recently discovered Uranus. Saturn is the slowest moving planet and symbolizes longevity, and resilience. According to medieval texts, plants ruled by this constant planet are extremely hardy in nature--take, for example, the famously pest- and weather-resistant cedar tree.
1 oz. TY KU soju
1 oz. TY KU sake
1 oz. cedar tip martini syrup
1/4 oz. lemon juice
(served up with a sugar rim)
Pisces: star ingredient: fig
The vast number of seeds in a fig make it a fruit ruled by Jupiter. This huge planet is the owner of all things ubiquitous, prolific and abundant. That is why the fig is a Pisces.
2 oz. TY KU soju
1 1/4 oz. fig syrup
3/4 oz. lemon juice
(served up with a sliced fig garnish)
*TY KU is an event sponsor and their low-calorie soju will be used as an ingredient in all the drinks.
