Vital Tested: Barres & Belles
This new workout will leave you strong and svelte.
We suffer from a split exercise personality. Sometimes, we want to feel like a graceful ballerina. Other times, we want to pump serious iron.
So we were excited to try the new Barres & Belles class from Pilates on Fifth. The hourlong class fuses traditional barre moves with kettlebell weights.
We performed an arm toning sequence using one- to two-pound weights, thigh-burning pliés and used kettlebells for exercises such as deadlifts, squats and even ab-flattening Russian twists. Each class is different, so you won't get bored.
Never used a kettlebell? No worries! The class is designed for all levels, and the Pilates on Fifth staff will teach you proper form (they were trained by the two-time female world champion in kettlebells, Lorna Kleidman).
To test your strength, try our favorite ab-toning move from class: the plank pike.
Do the bells, and you'll get whistles.
