Vital Tested: Tabata 2010

Tabata 2010

Timing is everything with this new class at Equinox.

We've been know to keep an eye on the clock during our workouts, counting down the minutes 'til we're done.

With Tabata 2010, the instructor does the clock-watching for you. The new class at Equinox is based on interval training with 20 seconds of strenuous exercise, followed by 10 seconds of recovery.

During the 45-minute session, you'll do eight sets of various moves--four on each side--to target your arms (oh hello, triceps, I remember you), core, legs, and backside.

The stop and go strategy helps boost VO2 max (the amount of time it takes you to get winded). In fact, according to one study, athletes who practiced Tabata increased their VO2 max by 16% in four weeks.

And even better news: The intense bursts rev up your metabolism and help burn fat.

Check out the Tabata schedule at 85th and 3rd, 44th and Lex, Greenwhich Ave., and Brooklyn Heights. Time is of the essence.
