Planting the Seed
The dirt--or lack thereof--on Window Farms.
Living in Manhattan often means giving up a few things: closet space, counter space, space in general.
But there's one thing you can enjoy no matter how itty-bitty your apartment may be: a farm. Or, at least a Window Farm. Conceived of by two New Yorkers, the farms let you grow your own veggies throughout the year--yes, even in winter.
The DIY hydroponic system (meaning plants grow in water without soil) can be set up using recycled materials and a few hardware store finds. (Get the How-To Guide here.)
So far, urban gardeners have managed to grow sweet basil, endive, snap peas and more. For neophyte farmers, stay tuned for helpful, step-by-step workshops.
