We spotted a fitness trend that won't make you board.

Row, row, row your board, gently down the street.

Around Venice Beach and Malibu, we spotted a fitness trend we could "stick" with (even Matt McConaughey is rocking it): Land paddling. The surf-meets-skate workout, invented by SoCal native Steve McBride, feels like rowing but gives you skills you can strut on the shore.

How: Grab a skateboard (Tip: Fans use "longboards," whose length and bigger wheels make balancing easier), and get set up with the Kahuna Big Stick: a rubber-bottomed bamboo pole you use to push off, oar-style. The motion is softer on joints than kicking off a skateboard, and the gentle ride can even be meditative.

Why: It's one workout that won't leave you board. Paddling works your upper body and core, sizzling about 450 calories an hour.

Where: Sports Chalet or Kahuna Creations.
