Play in the Street
On October 9, feel like a kid again (and you won't have to look both ways).
Remember when you were little, and your parents kept warning you to stay on the sidewalk--when what you really wanted was to dash out into the street?
In a few days, you can break the rules. On Sunday, October 9, CicLAvia* returns to LA, closing 10 miles of streets to car traffic from 10AM-3PM (click here for the route).
Get off that treadmill, leave your gas guzzler behind, and let the city be your playground! Now is your chance to roller skate, bike, run, walk, play hopscotch and do cartwheels--with reckless abandon. Or just plop yourself down in the middle of an intersection. No one will give you a jaywalking ticket (or a time-out).
Here's what else you'll find:
• Art, performances, music, and interactive activities (dance troupes, yoga workshops, a mobile DJ booth and a life-size chess game; see a list of mini grants given to artists and organizations for the event)
• Neighborhood guides highlighting architectural, cultural, and culinary attractions
• Food trucks, restaurants, and watering holes will provide food and drink
• Health and wellness booths along the route
• Real people! Face to face!
It's anything but pedestrian.
*CicLAvia, a city-sponsored event, is LA's version of Ciclovía, which began more than 30 years ago in Colombia, where every Sunday 80 miles of streets close to car traffic to reduce pollution and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
