Downward Dog On The High Seas

Send to a friend
Strike a pose.

Let the ocean be your yoga mat.

Thanks to the recent heat wave, we've been running for the water. And doing headstands on it.

Don't believe us? Check out YOGAqua creator Sarah Tiefenthaler. The beachy yogini has taken popular poses from the mat to Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey, where you can now learn Fish and Dolphin pose with real marine life swimming beneath you.

You don't need any SUP (that's "stand-up paddle") experience to try this surf-inspired floating yoga flow. Sarah begins each lesson by teaching the basics of maneuvering and paddling. Once you've become used to the unstable base, it's time to learn a fresh take on familiar yoga favorites.

While our tester's Downward Dog was a little cautious at first, she soon gained confidence and managed a Plank series, Tree Pose and Crescent with ease.

Things got a little damp during Warrior Two as the pose's staggered stance really challenges the balance, but lying in Savasana with the waves lapping and the sun beaming overhead made up for the dunking. And falling in could be a pose.

Call it "Flying Fish."
