Kurt Elder's Dynamic X class gives you an anti-bootcamp workout.

This anti-bootcamp workout can shape you up and shed your pain.

Bootcamp workouts are all the rage--so when we heard about Dynamic X, a new anti-bootcamp class designed by Kurt Elder of Energy F/X Fitness, our curiosity was piqued. The "anti" comes from an emphasis on pain relief, rather than feeling the burn. But could this class still give us a butt-kicking workout?

Turns out it can. Our tester tried the circuit training workout at Mar Vista Park, and got an intense sweat on with TRX straps, jump ropes, balance lunges, core-strengthening mat moves and more.

Dynamic X takes the intensity and variety of bootcamp classes and pairs it with precise, hands-on instruction. In Elder's classes--run with a second instructor and capped at 15 anti-bootcampers--good form is de rigueur.

Plus each move is designed to do double duty: to get you fit and to relieve pain such as sore backs, tense shoulders, and tight hips. Each class begins with self myofacial release (watch Elder's explanation here) so you can learn to relieve pain on your own at home. Check out Elder's amazing pain-relieving stretches here.

He gives bootcamp the boot.
