A Hike With a View
Courtesy California State Parks, 2011
There's folklore and folk singers up in these hills.
Long before musicians like Neil Young and Woodie Guthrie arrived in crunchy Topanga Canyon, the Tongva tribe inhabited these oceanside mountains. Keep an eye out for Native American carvings (and deer!) as you hike through the state park up to Parker Mesa Overlook.
Where to park: Take Entrada Road east to Topanga Canyon State Park's lot (or park a few blocks below to avoid a $10 fee).
The terrain: Call for the wildflower report (818-768-3533), so you’ll recognize the flora, before heading off on a moderate hike along a largely paved fire road. No dogs are allowed; just watch your step for snakes. (It can get hot, so consider hiking in the morning.)
The route: Follow the trailhead from the east end of the parking lot. Then head through lush greenery above Trippet Ranch, up 1,200 ft. to Parker Mesa Overlook for 360° ocean, mountain, Downtown and Catalina Island views.
The mileage: 6 miles.
It’s good for your heart...of gold.
