Make your place healthier with tips from a feng shui expert.
If moving your furniture could make you feel better, would you do it? Beverly Hills-based feng shui advisor Ariel Joseph Towne uses ancient techniques plus intuition to help any space's energy flow better. Whether or not you believe in the power of placement, Towne's adjustments immediately made our space more comfortable. Our experience:
Assume the position. We learned that the place one spends the most time--for instance, the sofa and the bed--should be in "command position": facing out with a wall at your back. We moved our desk from wall-facing to room-facing.
Step up. Our stairs face the door--a feng shui no-no. Energy is believed to flood down the steps, out the front door, we learned. To fix it, we placed a piece of furniture along the wall between the door and the stairs.
Clear out. Clutter, broken things and dust are said to interrupt energy flow. Towne's too-much-stuff rule: you should have 50% stuff, 50% space.
Stop a leak. Energy is believed to flow down open drains. Towne suggested putting rubber stoppers on especially wide drains when not in use, and keeping the toilet lid closed.
