Raw Deal
This raw, veggie, gluten-free café is a winner.
Just give it to us straight. No fillers, no gummy stuff, no preservatives. In a land of fakes, we want fluff-free food.
Annie Padden Jubb (pictured on the right, beside Chef Laurel Anderson) has us covered. We tested her new raw, vegetarian Hollywood café, LifeFood Organic, where nothing is heated over 118 degrees, preserving food's "life force." Bonus: it's gluten-free. What we loved:
- Almond milk. Made with coconut oil, vanilla and honey, this smooth drink tastes like exotic nectar.
- Green juice. Apple, kale, lemon and cucumber make a sweet, tangy refresher.
- 7th Heaven Soup. Sesame, miso and soy blend with veggies in this cold soup.
- Kelp noodles with pesto. The basil-rich pesto is a hearty belly-warmer.
- Seaweed salad. Made with brown seaweed, this slimming salad is savory.
- Chili. It tastes meaty, crunches like veggies, and is satisfyingly filling.
- Lemon meringue pie. The lemon is smooth and sour, the crust is made of nuts, and the "meringue" is whipped from coconut. Divine.
- Fruit cobbler. We couldn't get enough of the berries in this dessert.

We'll drink to that Annie time.
