Vital Tested: Wait a Second
Charge up your workout by putting it on "pause."
Stop right there. It'll do wonders for your muscles. That's the theory behind trainer Lalo Fuentes' "Freeze Technique," a workout style that will literally stop you in your tracks. We met Fuentes (pictured) at Sky Sport for the experience:
The beat goes on. Fuentes takes strength-training moves such as lunges, push-ups and squats, and introduces several-second beats between movements. At the bottom of a push-up, we held the pose (arm agony!), then burst into the next action. Extending into a side kick, we held out the leg (butt burn!). "This way, you can't use momentum," Fuentes explains.
Go with the flow. Flowing sets of yoga-style movements are stopped mid-motion to work muscles extra-hard. We went from Downward Dog to Upward Dog to a lunge, held it, then jumped back into the flow 10 times.
Extend yourself. Fuentes ends each session with deep stretches to lengthen exhausted muscles.
Ready? Steady, go.
