Come Sail Away

Daniel Laga shows off his work.

We asked a kettlebell trainer for his favorite LA staycation spot.

Each day this week, we're featuring the best staycations from local health gurus.

Trainer Daniel Laga (pictured), known for turning couch potatoes into hardbodies with his No Limit Kettlebell Bootcamp, believes in challenging workouts with serious results (fans say he refuses to let them fail). So when he takes a break, he does it big, with a trip to an island--Catalina Island. "If you don't want to spend on flying to Hawaii, you have to go to Catalina," says Laga. "The water is so blue and so clear."

Your wallet will thank you. "A boat trip over costs as little as $33 each way," says Laga.

You won't miss your workout. "You can do everything on the island: hiking, biking, spear fishing, snorkeling," says Laga. "For a perfect day trip, I'd take a morning hike [check out a free one from the Island Conservancy] and snorkel in the afternoon. You can also rent a kayak and SCUBA dive."

You can get fresh. Fish, that is: "Local fishermen are always delivering fresh fish," says Laga. "The restaurants are all amazing, and seafood is the thing to order." Armstrong's is an institution. 306 Crescent Ave., Avalon, (310) 510-0113, MAP

That rings our bells.
