Your Best Tea Recipe
Want the most health value from your cup? This recipe's the jackpot
Required time: About five minutes.
Skill level: Don't worry, it's in the bag.
Ingredients:
Green, black, white or oolong tea*, loose or in a tea bag**
Optional:
Fresh lemon juice
Rice milk
Raw honey, or one of these natural sweeteners
Fennel seed
Cinnamon
* Herbal teas don't have the antioxidants that these guys do.
** No, instant mixes don't count.
Directions:
Brew the tea for at least three minutes. The longer it steeps, the more antioxidants you get.
As you get your lemon juice from the fridge, bypass the milk. While the research isn't 100% conclusive, studies have shown that cow's milk diminishes the benefits of tea. For a creamy cup, use a plant-based alternative like rice milk.
If you're drinking green tea, squeeze in as much lemon juice as you want. Research shows that it helps your body absorb the tea's antioxidants (experts suspect this also applies to black tea).
Head over to your pantry, but stay away from the processed sugar (it's a nutrient leech). If you want sweetness, add a little raw honey or another natural sweetener. Get an extra flavor and digestive boost by stirring in some cinnamon or fennel.
