Ask David Kirsch: Best Breakfast
The celeb health and wellness guru helps start your day right.
Dear David,
It looks like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts have some healthy new breakfast options. What should I pick on the go?
-Jen
According to David Kirsch, neither menu is ideal, but if you must eat out, there are some healthy options. His ideal breakfast contains lean proteins and whole foods with minimal sugar and carbs (he's lookin' at you, fruit and bread!). Download his breakfast rules of thumb and check out his best/worst picks:
Starbucks
You'll have...
- Starbucks Perfect Oatmeal w/nut medley: hold the dried fruit and brown sugar.
- Starbucks Power Protein Plate: take the egg and give the cheese, fruit and bagel to a friend.
- Multigrain Roll: hold the almond butter and fruit preserves.
Don't do it:
- Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar, Apple Bran Muffin and Fruit Stella: don't be fooled by the whole grains or fiber--these likely have lots of sugar and fat.
Dunkin' Donuts
You'll have...
- Multigrain Bagel: hold the cream cheese.
Don't do it:
- Egg White Sandwiches: loads of fat (cheese), carbs and sodium (680mg) make these a no-no.
- Reduced Fat Blueberry Muffin: it may have fiber, but remember that this is a pastry.
Wherever you go, sip unsweetened green or herbal tea. If you must have coffee, add skim milk or drink espresso (no lattes or sweet drinks).
