Heart and Home
When it comes to everyday heart health, do you know where to look?
Sure, according to the old cliché, home is where the heart is. But when it comes to seeking out a healthy heart, we need to get a little more specific.
In honor of American Heart Month, cardiologist Dr. Jack Flyer walks us through five at-home spots where you'll find simple tricks for a healthy ticker:
Your pantry: Keep a stash of small dark chocolates on hand so your next sugar fix will include the antioxidant benefits of chocolate's flavonoids.
Your backyard: Small bursts of yard work (or other moderate household activities) really add up, as long as you average 30 minutes a day.
Your wine glasses: According to Dr. Flyer, moderate alcohol consumption (like a glass of red with dinner) can lower the risk of heart attack by 30-50%.
Your alarm clock: Set it so that you average eight hours of zzz's - less than seven and a half per night can have a significant (bad) effect on your ticker.
Your salad bowl: An easy way to combat overeating (and the heart risks that follow) is to fill your plate with salad at the start of each meal.
