Going Macro

Send to a friend

Macrobiotic means "long life,” so it's no surprise that this diet has become increasingly popular for its health-boosting qualities.

According to holistic health practitioner Carol Wasserman, anyone can enjoy the benefits of macrobiotic foods by incorporating some of these guidelines into their routine:

The foundations of the diet are whole, natural foods. One of the main premises is to eat local, seasonal foods, which keep your body in harmony with the environment.

Daily meals consist primarily of grains, beans and veggies, and the diet also includes sea vegetables, soups, fruits, nuts, seeds and fish (for non-vegans). Refined and processed foods are discouraged, but can be eaten occasionally.

Add variety to your routine to avoid a rut. Have fun experimenting with some of the more unusual ingredients like wakame, teff and seitan.

When you eat, just eat. That means no TV, phone or computer. Sit at a table, concentrate on your food and chew slowly. This will prevent overeating and allow for better digestion of complex carbohydrates.
