Just Say No
Pssst, over here.
Yeah, you. Party at my place. Everyone's going?
Accept too many "offers" this holiday season and you'll risk an obligation overdose.
Don't give into peer pressure – keep your sanity and your friends with these tactics for dealing with tough situations:
The scenario: A good friend surprises you with an invitation, catching you without an excuse.
Say: “I didn't know you were planning something! I'll double-check since that week is nuts and call you as soon as I know.” Buy yourself time without promising too much and then sleep on it.
The scenario: She keeps asking, but you have other things you want to do.
Say: “I wish I could, but I'm so bogged down I don't think I can make it. How about lunch next week, though?” Be honest, direct and don't over-apologize. A follow-up invitation shows it's not about her.
The scenario: You need to respond to an acquaintance or relative's dreaded event.
Say: “Last year was so much fun, but unfortunately I can't come this time.” Mention one positive thing about her hosting and don't elaborate.
