Vital Challenge: Walking Meetings
Get on your feet. We dare you!
Like death and taxes, meetings feel like just another unpleasant certainty in life. But there's a new way to make them less painful and--dare we say it?--fun and good for you.
Take them outside.
We all know that sitting all day might make you sick (and fat). But desk jockeys can win the battle of the bulge by suggesting a walking meeting. "It not only helps your body, but changing your surroundings makes you more creative," says Ted Eytan, MD, from Washington, DC. It can even help build trust between co-workers.
Here's how to hoof it:
1. The next time you get a meeting request, suggest that you discuss the topic during a walk--either around the block or to a specific destination like a park.
2. If you need to sit in front of a computer for part of the meeting, plan your route so you end up back at the office or at a coffee shop to jot down your notes.
3. Limit walking meetings to no more than three people. It's harder to hear when the crowd gets too big.
4. Meetings can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.
5. Remind everyone to change into comfortable shoes beforehand.
Walk on.
We want to hear from you! If you're planning a walking meeting, tell us about it on our Facebook page.
