So Fresh and So Clean

Finally, a Zagat-esque guide for health foodies.

Navigating LA's ever-changing restaurant scene can be tricky business, especially when you're dedicated to eating raw, vegan, and/or organic. So we're thrilled about the just-released Clean Plates LA book--our pocket guide to finding hidden healthy gems (there's a free app version, too!). Start your food tour here:

  • Try the SunChorizo or Kale Smoothie at Sunpower Natural Cafe.

    Here comes the Sun.

Quietly situated on the Cahuenga Pass, Sunpower Natural Cafe is easy to miss—and that would be a shame for any raw or vegan foodie. A signature staple of its colorful, creative dishes is SunChorizo, a tasty meat-cheat made of sun-dried tomatoes and nuts. Clean Plates Pick: the Kale Smoothie.

3711 Cahuenga Blvd., Studio City, (818) 308-7420, MAP
  • Try the Rainbow Roll at Shojin.

    Best Japanese vegan, fo' Sho.

Vegan sushi? Yes, please. Little Tokyo's Shojin serves up an array of macrobiotic, vegan and gluten-free Asian eats that excite even fish fans. Clean Plates Pick: the Rainbow Roll, made of tofu "tuna," avocado and assorted peppers and served with garlic olive oil.

    333 S. Alameda St., Los Angeles (213) 617-0305, MAP
  • Try the Flying Falafel Burger at Leaf Organics.

    Raw talent here.

Some of the cleanest plates in Culver City are at Leaf Organics, where "big, fresh, and interesting" salads and mouth-watering raw cheesecakes are standard fare. Clean Plates Pick: the raw Flying Falafel Burger, a spicy chickpea patty served on onion "bread."

    11938 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, (310) 397-0700, MAP
  • Try The Fudgey at Fatty's & Co.

    Fatty and fabulous.

Sip sustainably farmed wine and nosh on the all-vegetarian menu at Eagle Rock-based Fatty's & Co. We're especially sweet on the Vermont maple syrup cotton candy. Clean Plates Pick: The Fudgey, a decadent vegan chocolate cake dessert.
